“In my mind I see a group of chickens in a cage disputing over a few seeds of grain, unaware that in a few hours they will all be killed.”

–  Thich Nhat Hahn

The Zen master may spend much of his time leading retreats, but is highly aware of  what’s going on around him, including something like REDD+, UN’s idea of saving the forests by monetising them.  The quote neatly summaries my feelings every time I read about countries fighting to lay claims to the North Pole because of the oil lying underneath it, or Asian countries bickering over territorial waters, and so on and so on.

Sunshine Oilsands is seeking an IPO in Hong Kong.  It takes more energy and water and lots of pollution to extract a drop of oil from oil sands; they call it a process that turns gold into lead, but it’s apparently good business.  Somehow nobody clicks that there’s something fundamentally incompatible between the continuing pursuit of oil and efforts to tackle climate change.
