A visit to Wing Lee Street

The Central & Western Concern Group is organising a series of activities to highlight the need to preserve Wing Lee Street, the location for the Crystal Bear-winning film “Echoes of the Rainbow”.

The group wrote to the Town Planning Board in 2008 to object to the Urban Renewal Authority’s (URA) proposal for the “H19 Development” (town planning application: A/H3/381), under which it plans to build two new high-rise residential buildings after demolishing half the tonglous on Wing Lee Street as part of its comprehensive development of Staunton Street, Wing Lee Street and Bridges Street.

Tomorrow there’ll be a tour with a talk by Chinese University associate professor of architecture Woo Pui Leng on the tonglous on Wing Lee Street, a sharing by Chow Chung Tak, the landlord of 1-2 Wing Lee Street, on life on the old street; and an appeal to sign up to a one-man-one-letter campaign to save Wing Lee Street. Central & Western Concern Group will also explain the issues surrounding the URA’s plan and its impact on the local community.

Date: 6 March 2010 (Saturday)

Time: 2:00-4:00 pm

Place: junction between Wing Lee Street and Shing Wong Street

Greetings! I am new to Hong Kong and only recently began following the C&W Concern Group’s plight to save Wing Lee Street. The cultural talk and tour you mention above sounds extremely interesting to me, but as I only learned of it now, could you please let me know if there will be another event like this so I can also attend and show my support? Many thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia A. Sanvicente
